FORT MYERS, Fla. – Brooke Sweat (Youngquist), a member of the inaugural FGCU Volleyball team and FGCU’s career leader in kills, was named to the Under-26 beach volleyball national team by the USA Volleyball beach department this week.
The team will represent the United States in international competitions this summer.
The beach athletes have been training in Southern California with Eduardo “Anjinho” Bacil, USA Volleyball’s head beach volleyball coach with assistance from Jon Aharoni, USAV’s coordinator of beach coaching and development.
The U-26 men’s and women’s teams can compete in either the FIVB World Tour event in Netherlands, Aug. 10-15 or Finland, Aug. 17-22.
The women’s teams are Christal Morrison (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Cayley Thurlby (Lisle, Ill.) at No. 1 and Brooke Sweat (Estero, Fla.) and Tealle Hunkus (Redondo Beach, Calif.) at No. 2.
Hunkus and partner Cindie Boosin finished tied for 17th at the AVP Manhattan Beach Open on July 17-19, ahead of Morrison and partner Ashley Groothuis (tied for 25th), Thurlby and her partner Diane Copenhagen (tied for 33rd) and Sweat and partner Morgan Flarity (tied at 33rd).
