FORT MYERS, Fla. - The FGCU volleyball team took part in its first practice of the 2009 season Monday morning at Alico Arena. Seven returners and nine newcomers make up the roster as the Eagles look to earn their first berth to the NCAA Tournament as a D-I program, while also looking build on five consecutive 20-win seasons.
The Eagles have a 28-3 record in the A-Sun over the past two years but must replace a talented senior class from a year ago.
Head coach Dave Nichols enters his second season as head coach of FGCU in 2009 needing just four wins to reach 300 for his career. He led the Eagles to a 20-8 overall record in his first season as the leader of the Eagles.
While Nichols will need to find a way to replace recently departed seniors Ana Kokanovic, Audrey Campbell and Roberta Santos, he has gone a long way towards doing that with the mixture of incoming freshman and transfers.
FGCU will kick off the season when it meets Miami in the first of three matches at the Hurricane Invitational on the campus of the University of Miami. Following a tournament at USC and four A-Sun road matches, the Eagles will make their 2009 home debut on Sept. 18, when they play host to Belmont.
Tickets for the 2009 FGCU volleyball season are now on sale. Tickets may be purchased by visiting the FGCU Ticket Office in the main lobby of Alico Arena from 10:00 a.m.-5 p.m. ET (Monday through Friday), calling (239) 590-7145 or by logging on to FGCUAthletics.com.
