BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Jelena Simic and Anna Wagner racked up a game-high 10 kills apiece as the Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team swept Campbell in Atlantic Sun Conference play on Friday night.
FGCU (3-5 overall, 2-0 A-Sun) cruised past Campbell 3-0 (25-18, 26-24, 25-19) at the Convocation Center in Buies Creek, N.C.
The Eagles opened the match strongly and quickly took a 16-10 lead in the first set thanks to a kill by senior Chandra Lefever (Fort Morgan, Col.). FGCU stretched that lead to 18-12 after kills by Ashley Yance (Fort Myers, Fla.) and Wagner (Lincoln, Neb.). FGCU eventually won the first set 25-18 thanks to a kill by junior Jacqueline Cowden (Danville, Calif.). Both teams finished the set with a .143 hitting percentage.
The second set was played much closer than the first as Campbell fought hard but the Eagles eventually took the set 26-24. FGCU led 23-20 and seemed to have the set wrapped up, but back-to-back kills by CU’s Jordan Reaves and Emily Werner forced FGCU head coach Dave Nichols to burn a timeout. After service errors by both teams, Campbell tied the score at 24-24 off a FGCU attack error. FGCU finally won the second set thanks to a pair of kills by Simic. The Eagles took the second set despite being outhit .242 to .234.
In the third set the Camels jumped out to an 8-7 lead, but that would be that last time they would lead in the match. The Eagles took control of the set by going on a 15-8 run to go up 22-16 and eventually took the set off an attack error by CU’s Werner. Campbell hit .083 for the set while FGCU hit .135.
Simic and Wagner both had a game-high 10 kills for the Eagles. Yance chipped in with eight kills of her own and hit .429 for the match.
Lefever had a game-high 32 assists and a game-high three aces while Youngquist led all players with 19 digs. Junior Simic also had 12 digs for the Eagles.
The Eagles have a pair of matches left on their season-opening 10-match road trip. They will take on conference foes East Tennessee State on Saturday and USC Upstate on Monday.
