FORT MYERS, Fla. – FGCU will host No. 1 seed Lipscomb in the championship game of the 2009 Atlantic Sun Volleyball Tournament today at 3 p.m.
The Lady Bisons (27-3), who have won 21 consecutive A-Sun matches and have a Division I RPI in the top-50, advanced to the title game with a 3-1 win over Belmont in the early match on Friday night. It was the fourth straight time the Lady Bisons met Belmont in the tournament, with the winner of the previous three matches taking the A-Sun title.
Florida Gulf Coast (18-12) will be without junior outside hitter Jelena Simic (Lazarevac, Serbia), who went down with an injury late in the first set of the Eagles match against Jacksonville on Friday night. FGCU, the No. 3 seed, managed to sweep Jacksonville 3-0 by scores of 29-27, 26-24 and 25-18 despite the loss of Simic. Jacksonville, the No. 2 seed, was only one of two teams to defeat the Eagles on their home court this season, with the other loss coming at the hands of the Lady Bisons.
The loss to the Lady Bisons earlier this season was only the third loss in 33 matches and three seasons in the A-Sun for Florida Gulf Coast. The last time a host team has won the A-Sun Tournament was in 2006 when Belmont prevailed.
