FORT MYERS, Fla. – The summer is over and the FGCU volleyball squad officially returned to campus to open its preseason on Monday when it assembled at Alico Arena for its first practice.
The Eagles began their 2010 season at 7:30 a.m. today with a workout in the weight room followed by a morning practice at 8 a.m. The team will take the court again this afternoon and twice-a-day leading up to the week before their first match of the season against Bethune-Cookman (August 27).
Under the direction of third-year head coach Dave Nichols, the 2010 edition of the Eagles return 11 players, led by All-Conference performer Jelena Simic (Lazarevac, Serbia), from the 2009 club that was the runner-up at the 2009 Atlantic Sun Volleyball Championships and went 15-5 in the A-Sun to finish the regular season in third place. FGCU also welcomes six newcomers to the program, including former FGCU women’s basketball standouts Chelsea Lyles (Colorado Springs, Col.) and Adrianne McNally (Howell, Mich.).
“You’re always hopeful about the first practice,” said Nichols. “The team came back in better shape than they did last preseason and they were very attentive and detail oriented, which made the first practice go well.”
FGCU will kick off the season by hosting the 2010 Homewood Suites Volleyball Classic from August 27-28, where they will take on Bethune-Cookman, UCF, FAU, and Houston Baptist.
Tickets for the tournament can be purchased through the FGCU Ticket Office in Alico Arena either in person or by phone at (239) 590-7145. Tickets are also available at www.FGCUathletics.com/tickets. All Tournament passes, valid for all games during the tournament, will be $10 for adults and $5 for youth (ages 3-18).
