CORVALLIS, Ore. – Senior Caitlin Shawver (Lauderdale by the Sea, Fla./Barry/ Northeast HS) recorded a game-high nine kills as the FGCU Volleyball squad (2-4 overall) was swept by Oregon State (2-3 overall) (25-15, 25-11, 25-16) on Friday evening in the their first match of the Active Ankle Challenge.
Oregon State jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead in the first set, but the Eagles battled back to make the score 17-14 after an attack error by OSU. The Beavers then wrapped up the set with an 8-1 run to take the 25-15 win.
Oregon State continued their solid play as they took the second set with a .375 hitting percentage. OSU jumped out to a 12-2 run and would hold off the Eagles to take the second set 25-11.
FGCU began the third set with a pair of kills from freshman Jessica Barnes (Winter Haven, Fla./Haines City HS), but still trailed 5-4. A 16-7 run by the Beavers gave the tournament host a 21-11 lead as they went on to finish the sweep.
Oregon State’s Jill Sawatzky registered nine kills, adding a pair of aces and seven digs, while Camillle Saxton had eight kills and four blocks for the Beavers
Shawver’s game-high nine kills paced the Eagles' offense. Shawver also recorded three digs, two block assists, and one solo block. Junior Holly Youngquist (Estero, Fla./Evangelical Christian) had a match-high 16 digs.
FGCU continues action in the Active Ankle Challenge on Saturday, Sept. 4, at 1 p.m. against No. 19 Michigan (3-1 overall) and at 8 p.m. against UNLV (1-3 overall).
