Volleyball to Hit the Road for a Pair of Conference Matches

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast volleyball team will head north this weekend to continue Atlantic Sun Conference play with matches at USC Upstate and ETSU.

The Eagles (4-15 overall, 1-4 A-Sun) will face the Spartans (9-14 overall, 1-5 A-Sun) at 7 p.m. on Friday, followed by a Saturday afternoon (2 p.m.) matchup with the Bucs (21-6 overall, 4-1 A-Sun).

FGCU has nine players between 46 and 123 kills so far this season, led by seniors Jacqueline Cowden (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista HS/Temple) and Chelsea Lyles (Colorado Springs, Col./Harrison HS/Western Nebraska CC), and sophomore Brittany Muse (Arcadia, Fla./DeSoto County HS). Junior Holly Youngquist (Estero, Fla./Evangelical Christian) leads the team with an impressive 4.41 digs per set, while freshman Camil Dominguez (Santo Domingo, D.R./Santa Teresita), who has been named to a pair of All-Tournament teams this season, runs the FGCU offense, averaging 9.00 assists per set.

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
With a 3-0 win over North Carolina A&T on Wednesday, Upstateā€ˆhas won its last two matches in straight sets.

Cori Harris leads USC Upstate with 265 kills and 31 service aces, while also registering 222 digs. Morgan Thomas is second on the squad with 204 kills and 55 total blocks. Emily Sanders runs the Spartan offense having recorded 855 assists this season.

FGCU holds a 5-0 lead in the series over Upstate. The last time these two teams met in Spartanburg, S.C., five different FGCU players had at least seven kills as the Eagles swept the Spartans, 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-21). Jelena Simic (Lazarevac, Serbia/ Kolubara Technical School/Seward County CC) led FGCU with game-high 12 kills and hit .259 in the win.

SCOUTING THE BUCS
ETSU is looking to extend their current six match winning streak after defeating Western Carolina 3-0 on Wednesday night. The Lady Bucs have won 13 of their last 14 matches, with their last loss coming on October 8 against Lipscomb (lost 3-1).

Heading into their Friday matchup with Stetson, the Bucs are led by Alysa Long’s 222 kills (2.27 per set). Long has also racked up 121 total blocks and is hitting .339 on the season. Setter Whitney Cogburn is averaging 9.46 assists per set (927 total assists), while on the defensive side, Kiley Tamblyn has racked up 423 digs.

FGCU holds a 5-0 lead in the series over ETSU. Last season in Johnson City, Tenn., Cowden blasted a game-high 13 kills to lead the Eagles to a 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-20) victory over the Lady Bucs.
