Eagles Fall to Belmont, 3-1

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Seniors Chelsea Lyles (Colorado Springs, Col./Harrison HS Western Nebraska CC) and Caitlin Shawver (Lauderdale by the Sea, Fla./Northeast HS/Barry) picked up double digit kills each and setter Camil Dominguez (Santo Domingo, D.R./Santa Teresita) registered a double double as the FGCU volleyball team fell to Belmont, 3-1 (23-25, 16-25, 29-27, 19-25) in A-Sun play on Saturday night at Alico Arena.

With the loss the Eagles fall to 5-18 overall (2-7 A-Sun), while the Bruins improve to 13-13 (7-2 A-Sun) on the season.

Shawver finished with a team-high 16 kills and added seven digs. Lyles recorded 10 kills and a .429 hitting percentage. Dominguez picked up her seventh double double with 43 assists and 11 digs. Senior Alexa Napoleon (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier/Jacksonville) finished with a career-high with a team-high 19 digs.

The Bruins led 14-9 in the first set, but the Eagles battled back and used an 11-2 run to grab a 20-16 lead. Belmont used a 5-0 to regain their lead (21-20) and force FGCU to call for a timeout. After the timeout, the Eagles scored consecutive points after a kill from Adrianne McNally (Howell, Mich./Pinckney HS) and an attack error by Belmont to grab a 22-21 lead. The Bruins responded by scoring four of the next five points to pick up the 25-23 win in game one.

In the second set, the Bruins jumped out to a 20-11 lead and would not look back as they won the set 25-16. Belmont hit .273, while holding the Eagles to .029.

In the third game, FGCU shot out to a 19-14 lead. After Belmont scored back-to-back points, Shawver blasted consecutive kills to give the Eagles a 21-16 lead. The Blue and Green would go on to hold off Belmont and win the third game (29-27) and force a fourth set. In the fourth game, the Eagles continued their solid play and grabbed an early 10-8 lead. The Bruins then employed a 15-4 run to grab a 23-14 lead and would go on to win the game (25-19) to the match (3-1).
