FORT MYERS, Fla. - The summer is over and the FGCU volleyball squad officially returned to campus to open its preseason on Wednesday when it assembled at Alico Arena for its first practice.
The Eagles began their 2011 season at 8:00 a.m. today with a morning practice. The team will take the court again this afternoon and twice-a-day leading up to the week before their first match of the season against Elon at the NCCU Tournament on August 26.
The 2011 edition of the Eagles, who were tabbed to finish fourth in the Atlantic Sun Conference preseason coaches’ poll, returns nine players, including 2011 Atlantic Sun Preseason Libero of the Year Holly Youngquist (Estero, Fla./Evangelical Christian) and 2010 All-Freshmen Team selection Camil Dominguez (Santo Domingo, D.R./Santa Teresita). FGCU also welcomes seven newcomers to the program, who are each expected to make an immediate impact on the program.
“You’re always hopeful about the first practice,” said head coach Dave Nichols. “I like our roster. We've added a lot of size and a couple skill positions that we think we needed more depth at.
The Eagles open their home slate by hosting the second annual FGCU Homewood Suites Volleyball Invitational from September 2-3. The invitational field includes USC, UCF and Furman.
FGCU season tickets can be purchased in person at the Alico Arena ticket office or by phone at 239-590-7145. Tickets are also available at www.FGCUathletics.com/tickets. The FGCU ticket office is open from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. from Monday through Friday.
