Gigi Meyer certainly seems to share her father’s passion for the game.
At 6:35 a.m. today -- nearly 90 minutes before the FGCU volleyball team’s first practice this season -- the freshman setter arrived early at Alico Arena for conditioning work, an advance meeting and to straighten things in her new locker, a photograph of which she tweeted to friends and her parents a day earlier.
“I was so ready. I was the first one in the gym,” said Meyer, joined in Alico Arena a few minutes later by her three freshmen roommates, all teammates on a revamped FGCU roster. “We were so pumped. Last night we were all talking about how we were so excited to get on the court together.”
While its seven-player incoming class -- five freshmen and two transfers -- is expected to help FGCU rebound from last year’s dismal, injury-marred campaign, Meyer stands out early if only because of her noteworthy father, former Florida football coach Urban Meyer.
