FORT MYERS, Fla. – After splitting a pair of Atlantic Sun Conference matches last weekend, the FGCU volleyball squad will welcome in-state rival USF to ‘The Nest’ at Alico Arena on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m for a non-conference match.
The Eagles enter the matchup with a 9-8 overall record (4-1 A-Sun), while the Bulls are 8-10 overall on the season with a 4-2 BIG EAST record.
FGCU has four players with 100+ kills so far this season, led by freshman Jill Hopper’s (Muncie, Ind./Yorktown HS) team-leading 208. Hopper, who has been named to three All-Tournament teams this season, ranks seventh in the conference and first among freshmen in kills. Sophomore Kaitlin Holm (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS/Marshall) and freshman Olivia Mesner (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River HS are second and third on the squad in kills with 161 and 136 kills, respectively. Mesner also ranks sixth in the A-Sun in hitting percentage (.283). Freshman setter Gigi Meyer (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz HS) has run the FGCU ranks offense, with 487 total assists for an average of 8.12 assists per set.

ALL-TIME SERIES vs. USF
The Bulls and Eagles have only met three times prior to Tuesday night’s match. The Green and Blue leads the all-time series 2-1, including wins in 2007 and 2010. The visiting team has a perfect 3-0 record in the all-time series. FGCU swept USF 3-0 (28-26, 25-16, 25-18) in the last meeting between the two teams on Nov. 11, 2010.
SCOUTING THE BULLS
The Bulls collected a pair of thrilling five-set victories in BIG EAST competition last weekend. USF defeated UConn and St. John’s in five sets, improving to 4-2 in conference play.
USF, who is 2-4 in road matches this season, rank 32nd nationally with 2.54 blocks per set. Middle blocker Andrea Rodriguez Gomez has anchored the team’s defensive unit, averaging 1.24 blocks per set, which ranks her 36th nationally. In the USF Invitational, Rodriguez Gomez notched a career high 14 block assists against the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Her block total against UMES stands as the single-game record amongst all BIG EAST programs this season. Kayla Walton has also been a force on the blocking lines as she has posted 67 blocks on the year (0.99 per set).
