NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Florida Gulf Coast University women’s volleyball team fell to second-seeded Lipscomb, 3-0 (18-25, 13-25, 22-25) in the semifinal match at the 2011 Atlantic Sun Volleyball Tournament at Allen Arena on Friday night.

FGCU finished the season with an 18-13 (10-3 A-Sun) record and made the semifinals for the second time in three seasons.

“I felt that our youth finally caught up with us, we struggled to find a rhythm and made some unforced errors but we keep fighting like we have done all year,” said head coach Dave Nichols. “We all hoped for a better outcome but I am really proud of what our team did this year.”

Senior Jelena Simic (Lazarevac, Serbia/Kolubara Technical/Seward County CC) led the Eagles with 10 kills and nine digs in her last match at FGCU. Freshman Jill Hopper (Muncie, Ind./Yorktown HS) chipped in with six kills and three digs. Freshman setter Gigi Meyer (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz HS) finished with 25 assists and 7 digs, while senior libero Holly Youngquist (Estero, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS) completed her FGCU career with 10 digs and two assists. Youngquist finished in fourth place on the A-Sun career digs list.

Lauren Ford recorded 12 kills to lead Lipscomb with teammate Kaycee Green chipping in with 10 kills. Caitlin Dotson added 21 assists for the Bisons.

Lipscomb finished with a .387 hit percentage compared to FGCU’s .110 percentage for the match.

In the opening set, the Eagles went back-and-forth with Lipscomb being tied nine times. The Bisons took control after back-to-back kills from Abby Fay to give them a 16-13 lead that they would never relinquish. They would rattle off nine of the next 14 points to take the first set 25-18. Senior Jelena Simic led FGCU with four kills and four digs in the set.

In the second set, FGCU fell behind early after an attack by freshman Olivia Mesner gave Lipscomb a 10-3 advantage. The Bisons would continue the pressure after a kill by Lauren Ford built their lead to 21-10. The Eagles would fall 25-13 in the second set giving Lipscomb a 2-0 lead in the match.

In the final set, FGCU battled to tie the match at 8-8 early on but Lipscomb regained the lead at 14-10 off a kill from Jewell Dobson. The Eagles would climb back into the set at 16-15 after a kill by junior Brooke Kohler (Jupiter, Fla./Jupiter HS/Clemson). The Bisons would open up a 24-20 lead before the Green and Blue took two straight points to cut the lead to 24-22. Kaycee Green finished the match with a kill to send Lipscomb to the A-Sun finals.

FGCU ends the season winning five of its last eight matches and will start preparations for the 2012 volleyball year.
