A block from Christine Pinder (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz HS/Houston/Central Florida CC) and Karina Mambuca (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast HS/Southeastern) would bring up set point for FGCU and, following an FIU timeout, Kaitlin Holm (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS/Marshall) came through with a kill to help the Green and Blue take set one, 25-23.
In set two, FIU jumped out to an early 5-0 lead and never looked back, going on to tie the match at 1-1 by way of a 25-13 set victory. Set three saw the opposite, as FGCU shot out to an early advantage and went on for a 25-17 set win, taking a 2-1 lead for the match.
The fourth set featured six tie scores and a pair of lead changes, but after FIU took a 13-12 lead on a kill by sophomore Silvia Carli, the Panthers used a 3-0 run to push their advantage to 16-12. FGCU got to within three points at 19-16, but FIU retaliated with back-to-back points to make it 21-16. Following an Eagle timeout, the teams traded points to make the score at 22-17 and FGCU managed one more point before three-consecutive kills by Carli, Gloria Levorin and Lucia Castro gave FIU a 25-18 set victory.
With the match knotted at 2-2, the teams battled through five tie scores and two lead changes in the final frame. FGCU rattled off three-straight points to take an 11-8 lead, forcing FIU to take a timeout. The Panthers would pull within two at 12-10 before FGCU tallied three-straight points to extend its lead to 14-10 and bring up match point. A pair of Eagle errors kept FIU alive, but a kill from Olivia Mesner (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River HS) gave FGCU the 15-12 set win and a 3-2 match victory.
Pinder led the Eagles with her second consecutive double double of the season, recording 10 kills and 10 digs. Mesner, Holm and Brittany Muse (Arcadia, Fla./DeSoto County HS) each chipped in with 10 kills in the win, while Gigi Meyer (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz HS) recorded 25 assists and seven digs.
