FORT MYERS, Fla. – Riding an impressive 14-match winning streak, the first place FGCU volleyball team will host the Dolphins of Jacksonville in Atlantic Sun Conference action Tuesday night. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
FGCU (18-7, 13-0 A-Sun), the first team to punch its ticket to the 2012 A-Sun Conference Tournament, is off to the program’s best start in conference play since the 2008 season, when they went 12-1 through 13 A-Sun matches and finished the season 18-2 (.900). The Eagles 14-match winning streak is tied for the longest steak in the program’s Division I history, while also being tied for the third longest streak in program history (2007). The 2006 edition of the Eagles hold the FGCU record after reeling off 27 in a row from Sept. 1 to Nov. 10.
The Green and Blue, who lead the A-Sun in hitting percentage (.275), opponent hitting percentage (.178), assists (13.70/set) and kills (14.74/set) in conference matches, showcase five players that have registered at least 155 kills far this season, led by sophomore Jill Hopper’s (Muncie, Ind./Yorktown HS) team-leading 253. Sophomore Olivia Mesner (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River HS) leads the team and the A-Sun in hitting percentage (.359). Sophomore Whitney Masters (Muncie, Ind./Wapahani HS) leads the team with 321 digs (3.61/set), while the setting duo of sophomore Gigi Meyer (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz HS) and junior Courtney Greenberg (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS/Juniata College) has run the FGCU offense, averaging 5.87 assists and 4.60 assists per set, respectively.
The Dolphins (7-20, 5-9 A-Sun) come into Tuesday night’s matchup having won three straight A-Sun matches. Jacksonville needed a 23-kill effort from freshman and reigning A-Sun Player of the Week Sammie Strausbaugh to outlast Kennesaw State, 3-2 (25-18, 20-25, 25-21, 21-25, 15-11), last Saturday (Oct. 27).
The Eagles hold an 8-4 lead in the all-time series over Jacksonville. In the last meeting between the two squads at Alico Arena (Sept. 23, 2011), Kaitlin Holm (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS/Marshall) blasted a match-high and career-high 19 kills as FGCU picked up a 3-2 (23-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-21, 15-12) win over JU in the 2011 Atlantic Sun season-opener.
