FORT MYERS, Fla. – Riding the nation’s second longest winning streak (15), the first place FGCU volleyball team will hit the road this weekend to face ETSU and USC Upstate in the final Atlantic Sun Conference regular season road matches of the season. The Eagles take on ETSU on Friday (Nov. 2; 7 p.m.), before heading to Spartanburg, S.C. to face USC Upstate on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 3; 3 p.m.).

FGCU (19-7, 14-0 A-Sun), guaranteed one of the top two spots in the 2012 A-Sun Conference Tournament, is off to the program’s best start in conference play since the 2008 season, when they went 13-1 through 14 A-Sun matches and finished the season 18-2 (.900). The Eagles 15-match winning streak is the longest steak in the program’s Division I history, while also being the third longest streak in the FGCU record books (2007). The 2006 edition of the Eagles hold the FGCU record after reeling off 27 in a row from Sept. 1 to Nov. 10.

In A-Sun competition, the Eagles have been dominant. FGCU has swept eight of their 14 opponents, including three-time defending A-Sun Champion Lipscomb, and have gone to five sets only twice, both times against Mercer. Seven of FGCU’s first eight A-Sun victories have been sweeps, and only Lipscomb (7) is close to the Eagles in three-set victories in conference play. Other than the Bisons, FGCU has at least twice as many as sweeps as any of the other A-Sun members.

The Green and Blue, who lead the A-Sun in hitting percentage (.277) and opponent hitting percentage (.175) in conference matches, showcase five players that have registered at least 160 kills far this season, led by sophomore Jill Hopper’s (Muncie, Ind./Yorktown HS) team-leading 257. Sophomore Olivia Mesner (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River HS) leads the team and the A-Sun in hitting percentage (.368) and hitting a solid .469 in conference play. Sophomore Whitney Masters (Muncie, Ind./Wapahani HS) leads the team with 327 digs (3.55/set), while the setting duo of sophomore Gigi Meyer (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz HS) and junior Courtney Greenberg (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS/Juniata College) has run the FGCU offense, averaging 5.88 assists and 4.54 assists per set, respectively.

The Lady Bucs (17-10, 8-5 A-Sun) come into Friday night’s matchup having won five of their last seven matches. In their last outing, ETSU needed a 25-kill effort from sophomore Meredith Hardy to get by Northern Kentucky, 3-2 (25-20, 19-25, 27-25, 22-25, 15-10) (Oct. 27).

USC Upstate (10-15, 5-8 A-Sun) comes into the weekend having lost two consecutive matches. The Spartans, who have an opportunity to move themselves into a better position for postseason play with three consecutive home matches starting this weekend, lead the A-Sun in service aces (1.42/set) and in digs (17.73) and also rank 21st nationally in digs.
