FORT MYERS, Fla. – FGCU women’s volleyball head coach Matt Botsford announced the addition of Kim Maroon to the staff this week. Maroon comes to FGCU as a former All-American at Villanova and graduate assistant coach at Texas A&M Corpus Christi and will serve as assistant coach in seasons to come.
“I am very excited to have Kim join the Eagle volleyball family,” said Botsford of the new addition to the staff. “I was lucky enough to witness her compete as an elite student-athlete and have had the pleasure of watching her make the transition into the coaching profession. She is extremely passionate about this sport and has a wonderful mind for the game. Kim possesses a natural ability to teach and I look forward to seeing the positive impact she will have on our team. She and I share a similar vision as to what can be accomplished here at FGCU and she will play a vital role in helping us achieve our goals.”
As a student-athlete Maroon had a tremendous career in the Big East and finished her career at Villanova as the NCAA record holder in digs per set at 6.87 and as the Big East record holder in single-season digs with 749 in 2011. The libero graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications in 2012.
While at Villanova, Maroon garnered Big East Libero of the Year honors after her junior and senior seasons and was an All-Big East selection three times, including first-team accolades. In three of her four years with the Wildcats she led the Big East in total digs.
In addition to being one of the elite liberos in the nation during her collegiate career, Maroon is no stranger to coaching as spent the 2012 and 2013 seasons as a graduate assistant coach at Texas A&M Corpus Christi. While at Corpus Christi, Maroon helped develop practice plans and individual skill instruction sessions. She also helped with game strategy, assisted with recruiting efforts and arranged travel plans.
With help from Maroon’s instruction, the Islanders recorded a school-best record of 13-5 in conference action during the 2013 season. In 2012, the team produced a program-best 21 wins and finished third in the Southland Conference.
Prior to her time at Corpus Christi, Maroon volunteered her time coaching the Philadelphia Volleyball Academy's PVA 18 Blue team from 2009 to 2012. While in Corpus Christi, she volunteered with the CC Crossfire Volleyball Club and the CC Wave Volleyball Club.
At FGCU, Maroon will focus on defensive work, first contact play and recruiting efforts.
Maroon graduated from Villanova in 2012 with a communications degree, and is currently pursuing a graduate degree in business at Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
