2008-09 Volleyball Coaches
|YEAR AT FGCU:|
Fernanda Nelson, one of the best setters in Brazilian national team and NAIA history, is entering her fourth season as a member of the Eagles volleyball coaching staff.
Nelson has helped lead the Blue and Green to an Atlantic Sun Regular Season crown (2008) and a 45-30 overall record (36-14 A-Sun) in her three seasons on the FGCU bench.
In addition to the team success that FGCU has achieved while Nelson has been apart of the family, the Eagles have also garnered several individual awards during her short time with the Blue and Green.
Setter Roberta Santos and outside hitter Ana Kokanvic, two of the best players in program history, earned first team All-Atlantic Sun honors in their senior campaign. This past season, libero Holly Youngquist and setter Camil Dominguez were named to the A-Sun All-Conference second team and A-Sun All-Freshmen team, respectively. In three seasons, Nelson has helped coach five All-Atlantic Sun selections (three first team), a pair of conference Freshmen Team honorees, an ESPN/CoSIDA Academic All-District 3 selection (Holly Youngquist; second team) and 26 A-Sun All-Academic selections.
Nelson became an FGCU Eagle after spending nine years at National American University in Rapid City, SD.
She worked extensively at NAU since arriving as a freshman in 2000. Nelson was named assistant coach for the Mavericks prior to the 2004 season at NAU.
A native of Brazil, Nelson has 13 years of playing experience in her native country. In 1997, she was named the top setter in Brazil. She went to National American in 2000 as a freshman and immediately made an impact, earning second team All-American (NAIA) honors during her rookie season. She helped lead NAU to a national championship in 2002, and by the end of her collegiate career she was a three-time 1st team All-American selection and twice named the National Player of the Year (2001, 2003). She was inducted into the National American University Hall of Fame in 2007 and the NAIA Hall of Fame in 2008.
Nelson along with her husband, Ethan, and daughter, Bella, reside in Estero.
