FGCU Women Hold off North Alabama
Junior Candy Myers (New Batavia, OH) scored 25 points and senior Andrea Clarke (Guelph, Ont.) added 16 points and six rebounds Tuesday night to lead Florida Gulf Coast University to a 66-52 victory over the University of North Alabama in a Division II South Region women’s basketball game at Flowers Hall.
FGCU won their seventh straight game to improve to 15-5 overall and 8-5 in south region play, while North Alabama fell to 5-15 overall.
The Eagles came out firing in the first half as Myers drained five quick three-pointers to help FGCU build their lead to 19 points at 28-9 in the first half. The Lions rallied for a 19-10 run to pull within 40-30 at the break. FGCU maintained a double-digit most of the second half, leading by as much as 16 points late in the game.
Myers, who has averaged better than 20 points per game over the past five games and tied the school record for three-pointers in a game for the second straight outing, added five rebounds and four steals. Forward Andrea Holbrook (Jeffersonville, IN) added seven points and six boards off the bench for the Eagles.
The Lions, of the Gulf South Conference, were led by Lauren Qualls and India Hackman with 13 points each.
FGCU, ranked No. 4 in the South Region, continues its road trip against Gulf South opponents when it travels up to Memphis, Tennessee to face No. 7 Christian Brothers University at 5:30 p.m.cst.
