FGCU Women Take 2-of-3 in Puerto Rico
FORT MYERS, FL – The Florida Gulf Coast University women’s basketball team won two of three games in a season-ending trip in Puerto Rico to finish the regular season with a 21-9 record.
The Eagles sandwiched a pair of victories over the University of Puerto Rico at Cayey, 90-36 and 101-38, around a tight 79-75 loss at the University of Puerto Rico at Rio Piedras.
In the first game at Cayey, senior forward Andrea Clarke (Guelph, Ontario) had a game-high 28 points to lead six FGCU players in double figures. In the process, Clarke, who hit 13-of-14 from the floor and 2-of-3 from the foul line, became the all-time leading scorer at FGCU. Freshman forward Amber Bishko (Orlando, FL) had a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds while junior guard Megan Jones (Indianapolis, IN) had 12 points and junior forward Jennifer Santana 11 points. Junior guard Ebonie Halliburton (East St. Louis, IL) and junior guard Candy Myers (New Batavia, OH) had 10 points each. Myers saw her streak of consecutive games making a three-point field goal snapped at 34 games.
At Rio Piedras, the hosts shot 45 free throws to pull out the four-point win over FGCU. The Eagles had four players foul out and finished the game with just four players on the court, including two with four fouls each. Jones and Halliburton had 18 points to lead the Eagles. Clarke hit 7-of-9 field goals before fouling out with 14 points. Junior forward Alex Kwiecinska added 10 points.
FGCU came back to top Cayey 101-38 in the final game on the trip. FGCU shot 63.3 percent from the field in the first half to build a 50-18 lead and coasted to the victory. Six players scored in double figures for FGCU, led by Jones with 21 points, including five three-pointers. Kwiecinksa (19), Clarke (15), Santana (14), Halliburton (13) and junior forward Andrea Holbrook of Jeffersonville, Indiana (11) paced the Eagles to their third 100 point plus scoring output of the season.
Clarke, the only senior on the roster, finished her career with 726 points in just two seasons with FGCU.
FGCU, which was ranked No. 10 in the most recent NCAA Division II South Region rankings, finishes the year with a regional record of 11-8. The top eight teams in each of eight geographical regions will advance to the NCAA tournament.
