FGCU Women's Basketball Adds Two Transfers
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University women’s basketball coach Karl Smesko announced the addition of two junior college transfers.
Chelsea Dermyer, a 5-8 point guard, and Katie Schrader, a 5-11 forward, will join the Eagles this fall from Yavapai College in Arizona. Both players will have two seasons of eligibility remaining.
The duo has been playing basketball together for nine years, starting in the sixth grade when they participated in their high school’s feeder league. The pair then attended Poudre High School in Fort Collins, Colorado. During their two years together at Yavapai, they helped guide the team to a 49-13 overall record.
While starting at point guard this past year, Dermyer averaged 8.7 points, 3.4 assists, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.8 steals per game. She was named to the all-conference third team after both her freshman and sophomore seasons.
“Chelsea is a solid point guard who can really push the ball,” said Smesko. "She is also a scoring threat and a good shooter. She is a really good fit for our style of play.”
Schrader averaged 17.1 points, 10.1 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 1.7 steals last season while shooting 58% from the field. She was named to the National Junior College Athletic Association honorable mention All-America team, the all-region first team and to the all-conference first team.
“Katie is a versatile post who can score in a variety of ways,” said Smesko. “She scores in the post, scores in transition and is a good shooter with three-point range. She is a very good all-around offensive player.”
FGCU has now signed eight players this summer. The two transfers join incoming freshmen Princess Stewart (Deerfield Beach HS), Candace Carreras (Boca Raton Pope John Paul II) and Alexandra Axam (Lantana Santaluces HS), plus transfers Alexandra Nelson, (Edinburgh, Scotland/Cincinnati State CC), Jennifer Conely (Warren, Minn./Lake Region State CC) and Shonna Soeby (Walhalla, N.D./Lake Region State CC) in this year’s incoming class.
