Women's Basketball to Compete In Valdosta State Classic

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The undefeated Florida Gulf Coast University women’s basketball team faces its stiffest test of the young season when it hits the road to Georgia for a pair of weekend games against top Gulf South Conference teams in the Valdosta State Classic. FGCU (7-0) will take on Valdosta State University on Friday night. Both teams enter the game unbeaten, as the Blazers enter the game with a 4-0 record and are ranked No. 22 in the most recent USA Today ESPN Division II Top 25 Coaches’ Poll. The Blazers feature all-Gulf South Conference forward Candice Ferrell, one of four returning starters from a team that advanced to the South Region semifinals a year ago. The 5-foot-11 senior is averaging 15 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. On Sunday afternoon, the Eagles will face the University of West Georgia. The Braves are 4-2 heading into Saturday night’s game against Saint Leo. Senior guard Tai Ellis, a pre-season all-Gulf South Conference selection, leads the Braves in scoring and is one of five returning starters from a team that went 16-11 last season. Both games are key NCAA Division II South Region match-ups. The Eagles are opening the season with 17 consecutive games against regional competition. FGCU, which received three votes in the pre-season national poll, enters the VSU Classic after earning its first road win on Tuesday night, 79-39, over Florida Southern College in Lakeland. Each of the Eagles’ victories has been by 30 points or more. In each of the past five games, FGCU has held their opponents under 40 points.
