Women's Basketball knocks off #22 Valdosta State

VALDOSTA, GA – After trailing for most of the game, unbeaten Florida Gulf Coast University rallied down the stretch to upset #22 Valdosta State University 54-47 in the VSU Classic on Saturday night. The Eagles took their first lead of the game, 44-42 on a three-pointer from senior guard Ebonie Halliburton with 2:07 to play. FGCU, which made just nine field goals in the second half, overcame an eight-point second-half deficit by holding Valdosta State to just seven points in the final 10:27 of the half to extend their season-opening win streak to eight games. The Blazers (5-1) held the Eagles to just 28% from the field in the first half en route to a 27-21 lead at the break on the strength of 18 points in the post. VSU led 38-35 midway in the second half before both teams went more than six minutes without scoring. Although FGCU made five less field goals than Valdosta State, the Eagles knocked down four more three-pointers and hit 15-of-26 from the free throw line compared to the Blazers 2-of-6. Junior forward Katie Schrader scored a game-high 20 points and had a team-high 9 rebounds for FGCU. Senior guard Candy Myers added 15 points in the Eagles lowest offensive output of the season. Valdosta State was led by 14 points from forward Candice Ferrell. FGCU faces West Georgia tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. in the final game of the VSU Classic.
