FGCU Women Inks Two Early Signees
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Two players have signed National Letters of Intent during the early signing period to join the women’s basketball program at Florida Gulf Coast University head coach Karl Smesko has announced.
Adrianne McNally, a 5-foot-11 guard/forward from Pinckney High School in Pinckney, Mich., and Steffi Sorensen, a 5-foot-10 guard from Bartram Trail High School in Jacksonville, Fla., will join the Eagles for the 2006-07 season. They are the first signees for FGCU this year.
“We are very excited about adding players of Adrianne and Steffi’s caliber to our program,” said Smesko. “Both are a tremendous fit for what we do and I expect both players to make positive contributions right away.”
McNally guided Pinckney High School to a 22-3 record last season, including a Southeast Michigan District Title. She was named Kensington Valley Conference Player of the Year, Associated Press Class A All-State Honorable Mention, and Detroit Free Press Class A All-State fourth team. McNally averaged 14 points, 8.8 rebounds, 6.9 assists, and 3.9 steals last year.
“Adrianne is a good all-around basketball player,” said Smesko. “She can do a little bit of everything. She isn’t afraid to throw her body around.”
Sorensen was nominated as a 2006 McDonald’s All-America prior to the start of the 2005-06 season. As a junior, she was named Jacksonville Player of the Year, St. Augustine Record Player of the Year for the second consecutive year, and first-team FHSAA Class 5A All-State. She averaged 19 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, and 5 steals per game during the 2004-05 season. As a sophomore, Sorensen averaged 23 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, and 5 steals and was named to the Class 5A All-State second team.
“Steffi is an explosive offensive player,” said Smesko. “She is a great shooter and can take it to the basket. She is also very good at finding open teammates.”
FGCU opened 2005-06 with 11 straight wins and is ranked 24th in the latest USA Today/ESPN Division II National Poll.
