FGCU Women Move Up to 20th in National Poll
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University women’s basketball team moved up to No. 20 in the latest USA TODAY ESPN Division II Top 25 women's basketball poll released Tuesday afternoon.
FGCU defeated West Florida 56-51 in their only game last week to move up four places. Last week FGCU made its first appearance in the national top-25 at No.24. The Eagles are now 11-0, setting a record for most consecutive wins to open a season.
Washburn (9-0) continues to hold onto the top spot. North Dakota- Grand Forks (12-0) moved up one spot to second while Drury (8-1) fell to third. Emporia State (10-0) and the University of Charleston (8-0) round out this week’s top five.
FGCU, which received 140 total points in the voting, was one of four South Region teams represented in the poll. Henderson State (9-1) remains eighth, Valdosta State moved up two spots to 11th and Rollins is up three spots to 13th. FGCU handed Valdosta its only loss, 54-47, on December 3 in Valdosta, GA.
The USA Today ESPN Board of Coaches is made up of 27 head coaches at Division II institutions. All are members of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.
The first NCAA Division II regional rankings are scheduled to be released in early January
