FGCU Holds Off Columbia Union in Women's Basketball
TAKOMA PARK, Md. – Senior guard Candy Myers tied a school-record with eight three-pointers for a game-high 24 points to lead No. 14 Florida Gulf Coast University to a 71-59 win over Columbia Union in women’s basketball action Thursday night.
Myers knocked down 8-of-16 from beyond the arc to tie the record set back in November by teammate Jen Conely against Puerto Rico – Cayey. Myers previous career-high for three-pointers made in a game was seven, which she accomplished three times last season. She also pulled down seven rebounds on Thursday.
Junior forward Alex Nelson scored 14 points, connecting on 3-of-4 from 3-point territory while Conely added nine points on a trio of 3-pointers. The Eagles connected on 14-of-29 (48.3) from 3-point land to tie a team season-high. Sophomore forward Jessica Hathaway had a game-high 13 rebounds to go with six points for FGCU, which improved to 17-1 with the victory.
The Eagles held a 37-31 lead at halftime and extended the lead to 16 points, 60-44, with 6:15 remaining to play. FGCU shot just 39.6% from the field and committed a season-high 30 turnovers, but held a 47-27 advantage in rebounds.
Jada Richardson had 15 points for Columbia Union (2-15), while Cherisse Buddy added 13 points and Bethany Sloat 12 points.
FGCU will travel to the University of District Columbia on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
