FGCU Women 13th In New National Poll
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University women’s basketball team dropped one spot to No.13 in this week’s USA TODAY ESPN Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll released Tuesday night.
FGCU, which has won 11 consecutive games, improved to 23-1 with three victories last week. The Eagles knocked off regional foe North Alabama, as well provisional Division II member Palm Beach Atlantic and NAIA member Florida Memorial.
Washburn (22-0) received 22 of the 26 first-place votes to remain No. 1. The University of North Dakota - Grand Forks (25-0) received four first-place votes and holds the second spot. Emporia State (19-1) is third. Drury (20-1) and Saint Cloud State (20-2) switched places and are fourth and fifth, respectively. FGCU received 333 points but swapped places with Cal State – Bakersfield (18-1).
Five South Region teams are still represented in the national poll. Rollins (20-0), Delta State (19-1) and Henderson State (19-3) hold down the No. 9 to No. 11 positions respectively. Fort Valley State moved up one spot to No. 16.
The USA Today ESPN Board of Coaches is made up of 27 head coaches at Division II institutions. All are members of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.
The new NCAA Division II regional rankings will be released Wednesday afternoon.
