FGCU Women Hold 12th in Top-25 Poll
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University women’s basketball team held onto the No. 12 in the latest USA TODAY ESPN Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll released Tuesday night.
FGCU, which has won 16 consecutive games, won the 2006 National Independent Tournament championship at Alico Arena over the weekend. The Eagles defeated Johnson & Wales, Claflin and the District of Columbia to close out the regular season with a 28-1 record.
One of three remaining unbeaten teams in Division II, Washburn (27-0) received 21 of the 23 first-place votes this week to remain No. 1. The University of North Dakota - Grand Forks (30-0) received the other two first-place votes and holds the second spot. Drury (26-1), Glenville State (26-1), and Emporia State (24-3) remain unchanged in this week’s top five.
FGCU is one of five South Region teams among the top-15 ranked teams. Rollins (26-0), one of the three unbeaten teams, is eighth, followed by Delta State (25-2) at No. 10, and Henderson State (24-3) at No. 11. Fort Valley State (26-1) remained No. 15 this week.
The USA Today ESPN Board of Coaches is made up of 27 head coaches at Division II institutions. All are members of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.
The final weekly South Region rankings are scheduled to be released on Wednesday, March 1. The NCAA tournament field is set to be announced Sunday night.
