Haney to Join Coaching Staff
FORT MYERS, Fla. -FGCU women's basketball Head Coach Karl Smesko announced that Ericka Haney will become the newest member of the Eagles coaching staff.
“Ericka is a great addition to our coaching staff,” Smesko said. “She won a Division I National Championship as a player at Notre Dame and has Division I coaching experience at Chicago State and Louisiana Tech.”
Haney will come to FGCU from Louisiana Tech, where she spent the past year as Director of Basketball Operations. She also spent three years prior to her job at Louisiana Tech serving as an assistant coach at Chicago State.
While on the Louisiana Tech staff, Haney’s responsibilities included on-campus recruiting, film exchange, public relations, monitoring academic progress, team travel, publishing the Lady Techster newsletter and various other duties.
“Ericka will have a wide array of responsibilities including recruiting and coaching the posts,” said Smesko. “She has an impressive background in the game. She will have much to contribute to our program.”
Haney, a Toledo, Ohio native, is a 2002 graduate of Notre Dame. She was an instrumental part of the program’s national title as she recorded an impressive double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds as the Irish overcame a 17-point halftime deficit to defeat Connecticut in the national semifinal. She then added 13 points and grabbed five rebounds in the 68-66 win over Purdue in the national title game. During her career, Haney started 65 games for head coach Muffet McGraw.
After closing out her collegiate career, Haney was selected in the 2002 WNBA Draft by the Detroit Shock. She played professional basketball in Sweden and spent a year in the National Women’s Basketball League with the Grand Rapids Blizzard before entering the coaching profession.
"I am very excited to be a part of FGCU and to work with Coach Smesko,” said Haney. “This program has tremendous amounts of potential and a solid foundation of success to build upon.”
Haney fills a vacancy created by the departure of Eagles Assistant Coach LeAnn Freeland, who accepted the head coaching position at the University of Indianapolis. Freeland spent four years at FGCU prior to accepting the position at the NCAA Division II institution.
