Daume to Join Coaching Staff
Fort Myers, Fla. – FGCU women's basketball Head Coach Karl Smesko has announced that Nathan Daume will become the newest member of the Eagles coaching staff.
"We are very fortunate to be able to hire someone with Nathan's experience," said Smesko. "His experience as head coach and his connections will be valuable to the program."
Daume comes to FGCU from Hutchinson Community College, where he spent the past five years as Head Coach. He was only the fifth women's head coach in the program's 33-year history. Daume leaves Hutchinson CC with a record of 97-59.
Daume led Hutchinson CC to three 20-win seasons, including a 23-8 record in 2005, the fifth-best season in HCC women's basketball history. This past season, the HCC women finished the season 21-11 and lost in the quarterfinals of the Region VI Tournament. His 97 wins place him fourth on the HCC women's coaching list.
Defensive strategy is something that Daume will bring with him to FGCU. HCC ranked in the Top 10 nationally in scoring defense in four of Daume's five seasons; three times they were ranked fourth or better. His 2004 team was No. 1 in the nation, allowing only 48.0 points per game. In seventy of the 154 games that Daume coached at HCC, his teams limited opponents to less than 50 points. On 35 of those occasions, HCC allowed less than 40 points. Hutchinson also allowed 70 points or more only 10 times during Daume's tenure.
During his time at Hutchinson CC, Daume had great success in moving players on to the four-year level. In five seasons, eight of his players moved on to the Division I level, six more to Division II and four others to NAIA schools.
"I’m excited to be here," said Daume. "Florida Gulf Coast has had a lot of great tradition. Coach Smesko has done a tremendous job since the program has started. This is a great situation for me, it's a situation where I can come in and learn from a very good coach."
Daume, along with fellow new hire, Ericka Haney, fills a vacancy created by the departure of Eagles Assistant Coach LeAnn Freeland, who accepted the head coaching position at the University of Indianapolis. Freeland spent four years at FGCU prior to accepting the position at the NCAA Division II institution.
"Nathan and assistant Ericka Haney complement each other well," said Smesko. "I am eager to start working with them."
