Women's Hoops Signs One More
FORT MYRS, Fla., - Florida Gulf Coast University Women’s Basketball Coach Karl Smesko has announced the signing of junior college transfer Jackie Thiel from Odessa College in Odessa, Texas.
Originally from Plainview, Texas, the 5-4 guard helped Odessa College win the 2007 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Championship with a (29-2) record. Thiel averaged 5.3 points, 1.7 rebounds, 2 assists, 1.7 steals and shot 37% from the three-point line.
Thiel transferred to Odessa College after spending her freshman year and Central Arizona College in Coolidge, Arizona. She helped guide Central Arizona to a (36-1) record and a 3rd place finish at the NJCAA National Tournament. She averaged 9.3 points, 2 rebounds, 5.1 assists, 2.7 steals, and shot 44% from the three-point line.
“We are very excited to add Jackie to our program,” stated coach Smesko. “She has played for two nationally competitive junior college programs and will add quality experience in the guard position. Jackie is a very solid point guard, who makes plays, and shoots very well from behind the arc. She should make contributions right away for our team.”
The Eagles return three starters from the Division II National Runner-up next season, their first as a member of NCAA Division I. The Eagles will be a full member of the Atlantic Sun Conference next season as well.
