FORT MYERS, Fla. – Sarah Hansen, a 5’9 wing from General McLane High School in Edinboro, Pa., has signed on as the newest member of the FGCU women's basketball program, head coach Karl Smesko announced.

“Sarah Hansen is a kid who got overlooked and really fits in well with what we do,” said Smesko. “She has versatility, she has perimeter skills, she has toughness and strength and can play inside a little bit. She's a good rebounder; she makes a lot of plays. She has a good assist-turnover ratio, gets a lot of steals and played on a good team. She can drive and shoot and can guard two positions."

A three-year varsity starter, Hansen finished her high school career with 1,299 points and a school record 984 career rebounds. She also broke General McLane’s single season rebounding record by grabbing 307 rebounds during her senior year.

The Erie, Pa. native was a Times-News All-District 10 team selection, an All-Region first team selection, and a second-team All-State selection as a senior. She averaged 15 points, 11 rebounds, and 3.5 steals while shooting 42 percent from the field for the General McLane Lancers, who went 26-2 and won their second straight district title last season.

Hansen joins Chrissy Rivette, who signed in the fall, as newcomers. Rivette, of Benton, Mich., made over 200 3-pointers while shooting 47 percent behind the arc. She averaged 19 points and nine rebounds last season. Smesko said both are expected to play big roles next season.

Smesko and the Eagles had great success this season with an A-Sun Regular Season Championship and a 26-5 record. FGCU advanced to the second round of the WNIT for the second consecutive year before losing in overtime to eventual champion USF.
