Eagles Fall to Georgia Tech in Preseason WNIT
ATLANTA, Ga. – Chelsea Lyles led the Eagles with 14 points and seven rebounds, but Georgia Tech’s defense was too much for the Eagles, as the Yellow Jackets knocked off FGCU, 58-48, in the Preseason WNIT Consolation Third Round. The Eagles shot just 28.9 percent from the floor, hitting only four of 18 three-pointers on the day.
A dismal shooting performance by the Jackets in the first half allowed the Blue and Green to hold a 25-22 lead going into the locker room. Georgia Tech grabbed 25 rebounds to the Eagles’ 12, but shot only 29.8 percent from the field. FGCU shot 8-for-21 shooting (38.1-percent) in the half.
The Ramblin’ Wreck opened the second half with a 9-1 run over the first six minutes to take their first lead since the 10 minute mark in the first half. Georgia Tech held the Eagles to only 20.8 percent shooting in the second half as they pulled away for the win. The Jackets, who held a distinct size advantage over the Eagles, outrebounded Florida Gulf Coast, 60-26, including 31 offensive rebounds.
The Yellow Jackets (2-1) were led in scoring by Brigitte Ardossi’s 13 points, who also added nine boards. Chelsea Regins recorded a double-double with 11 points and 16 rebounds, while Mo Bennett also reached double-figures with 13 rebounds to go along with eight points.
For the Eagles (1-2), Chelsea Lyles (Colorado Springs, Colo.) led the way in scoring with 14 points and rebounding with seven. Adrianne McNally (Howell, Mich.) was the only other Eagle in double-figures with 10 points, while Shannon Murphy (Brighton, Mich.) dished out a game-high five assists.
The Eagles will return home next weekend for the FGCU Thanksgiving Classic, which will be held Friday (Nov. 27) and Saturday (Nov. 28) at Alico Arena. FGCU will take on Tulsa on Friday and Rider on Saturday. Both games are scheduled for 7:05 pm tip-offs and can be seen live on ASun.TV.
