News & Notes on Akron
The University of Akron women's basketball team will look to snap a three-game losing streak this weekend when they face Rider Friday and Tulsa Saturday.
The Zips are on the last leg of a five-game road swing after opening the season at home on Nov. 13. In fact, UA has just four home games from Nov. 15 to Jan. 9 and will play nine of 13 contests on the road during that time.
Moreover, with trips as far east as New York, as far south as Florida and as far west as Illinois, Akron is seemingly spanning much of the midwest and beyond. The Zips were 2-12 in road games and 1-1 at neutral sites last season.
The Last Time Out
The Zips were defeated, 63-49, at Wright State (2-1) last Sunday afternoon in the Nutter Center.
Akron took an early 12-3 lead but a determined Raider squad went on a 9-0 run to tie the game (12-12). UA maintained an advantage until the 15-14 mark but two quick WSU lay-ups prompted a Raider three-point lead the Zips wouldn't recover from.
Offensively, the Zips were led by Jolene Tamboue who notched 11 points for UA while Kyle Baumgartner led UA on the boards grabbing seven.
Down 23-20 out of the half, the Raiders were quick not to let Akron grab any momentum as they went on a 13-4 run to go up 36-24.
Akron threatened when the Zips came within five at the 39-34 point thanks to two quick layups by Baumgartner and Rachel Tecca, which prompted a Wright State timeout, however, coming out of the break, the Raiders scored four unanswered layups going up 47-34 for a solid lead they never relinquished.
Akron shot 34.7 percent (17-of-49) from the field, 22.2 percent (2-of-9) from 3-point range and 56.5 percent (13-of-23) from
