Friday, July 02, 2010

FORT MYERS, Fla. - FGCU head women's basketball Head Coach Karl Smesko has announced that Abby Scharlow will become the newest member of the Eagles coaching staff.

“Abby is a competitor,” said Smesko. “She is highly motivated and energetic. She is a well-rounded coach, who will bring a lot to our program.”

Scharlow comes to FGCU after spending the last three seasons as an assistant at Valparaiso University. At Valpo, Scharlow was the team’s recruiting coordinator and handled all of the team’s equipment needs. Working with perimeter players, Scharlow had direct influence over a second team All-Horizon League guard in Valpo’s first season in the conference and a first team All-Conference selection in 2008-2009.

"Florida Gulf Coast is an unbelievable university and has a terrific athletic program,” said Scharlow. “The future is extremely bright and I am excited to be a part of it. I look forward to continuing the success and reaching new heights."

Prior to her time at Valpo, Scharlow played professionally in Finland, where she was named the Finnish Guard of the Year during the 2006-07 season. She helped lead Team Catz of Lappeenranta to the playoffs for the first time in team history playing in Division I.

The New Albany, Ind. native also has played professionally for the San Diego Siege, helping lead the team to the National Women's Basketball League championship in 2006. She also played for Club D.C. of Kastoria in Greece in 2005.

Scharlow played at UW-Green Bay from 2001-2005 where she competed on a nationally-ranked team which won three consecutive Horizon League titles and earned three straight NCAA Tournament appearances. A two-time first team All-Horizon League selection, she was a Street & Smith All-America Honorable Mention pick in 2003-2004.

A Horizon League All-Newcomer pick as a freshman, Scharlow was twice named to the league's All-Tournament Team, including being named the Most Valuable Player of the 2004 Conference Tournament.

As a prep player at New Albany High School, Scharlow was named to the Indiana All-Star Team in 2000.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING ABOUT SCHARLOW:

“Abby has done a great job in developing as a coach. She is able to relate well to players because of her successful collegiate and professional playing experience. We wish her well in her career.”
