Wednesday, October 27, 2010

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast women’s basketball team earned a spot in the first-ever CollegeInsider.com Women's Mid-Major Top 25 poll, announced on Wednesday evening. The Eagles start the season ranked No. 14.

Gonzaga opens the year as the top-ranked team, after advancing to the Sweet 16 of the 2010 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Tournament. The women's Mid-Major Top 25 is comprised of teams from the America East, Atlantic Sun, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, Great West, Horizon, Independents, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mid-Eastern, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Summit, Sun Belt and West Coast Conference. The Blue and Green are the only Atlantic Sun Conference team represented in the inaugural Top 25, while the 2010 A-Sun champs ETSU received 73 votes and USC Upstate received nine.

FGCU, previously tabbed as the preseason favorite to win the 2011 A-Sun regular season crown, returns seven players, including three starters from last year’s squad that went 14-0 at Alico Arena, bumping the current home win streak up to 24 games. FGCU’s 24-game home winning streak is the fourth longest streak in the nation behind UConn, Stanford and Lehigh. Murphy, a 2010 preseason All-Conference selection, is the Blue and Green’s top returning scorer (10.7 ppg). The senior ranked first in the conference and 45th in the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.71), while also shooting .354 from three-point range and leading the team with 33.0 minutes per game.

Aiming for their eighth 21-plus win season and a fourth consecutive bid to the WNIT, the Eagles will tip off the 2010-11 campaign by hosting the Pirates of Seton Hall at 7:05 p.m. on Nov. 12, in the season-opener for both teams. The Pirates will be the fourth BCS opponent to visit Alico Arena in the program’s brief three-year Division l history. FGCU is currently 2-1 at home all-time against BCS foes with its most recent meeting coming in the form of an 88-86 win over Florida in the season-opener of the 2008-09 season. FGCU also defeated USF in the opening round of the 2008 WNIT and fell to Florida State in the season opener of the 2007-08 campaign.
