Murphy Leads Eagles to 60-51 Win Over Campbell

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Senior Shannon Murphy (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) scored a team-high 14 points as the Eagles defeated Campbell, 60-51, in front of 2,348 fans at Alico Arena on Saturday night.

With the win the Blue and Green move to 21-2 overall (14-2 A-Sun), while the Camels fall to 11-16 overall (10-8 A-Sun).

The Blue and Green, who lead the nation in three-point field goals per game (10.9), knocked down nine triples on the night. FGCU’s defense forced Campbell into 13 turnovers and went on to score 11 points off of the Camels miscues. Campbell’s 51 points mark the 17th time the Eagles, who lead the conference in scoring defense (55.2 ppg), have held an opponent below 60 points this season.

Murphy finished with 14 points, four assists and three boards in 36 minutes. Redshirt-freshman Sarah Hansen (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane HS) registered 10 points and five rebounds, while junior Nicoya Jackson (Houston, Texas/Cypress Springs HS/Southwestern Christian) chipped in with 10 points and four rebounds.

Tonisha Baker, one of three Lady Camels to score in double figures, finished with a game-high 18 points. Jazmine Cooper picked up a double double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

With the score tied 17-17, the Eagles used a 14-3 run to grab a 31-20 lead with just under seven minutes left in the opening stanza. The two teams traded baskets the rest of the period and the Blue and Green took a 41-30 lead into the locker room at the intermission

Campbell shot 12-of-29 (41.4 percent) from the field in the first half. The Eagles have outscored their 16 conference opponents 585-422 in the first 20 minutes in 2010-11.

FGCU shot 15-of-28 (53.6 percent) from the floor in the first half, including 5-of-14 (35.7 percent) from long distance.

After Tonisha Baker knocked down a jumper to cut the FGCU lead to 41-32, the Eagles used a 10-4 run to take a 15-point lead (largest of the game) at 51-36 with 12:33 remaining in regulation.

Campbell fought back, eventually cutting the FGCU lead to 51-44 with five minutes left in the contest. FGCU quickly responded as Hansen scored on a layup and Griffin and Kelsey Jacobson (Barnesville, Minn./Moorhead HS) drained back-to-back three-points to push the lead back to double digits (59-46).

The Blue and Green will return to the court on Monday, Feb. 21 when they host the Hatters of Stetson (15-11 overall, 11-6 A-Sun) at Alico Arena. Tip off is set for 5:15 p.m.
