ORLANDO, Fla. – Sophomore Sarah Hansen (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane HS) registered her third double-double of the season with 20 points and 10 rebounds as the Eagles picked up a huge 75-36 non-conference road win over reigning Conference USA champ UCF Thursday night at UCF Arena.
With the win the Eagles improve to 6-1 on the season, while the Knights fall to 3-5 overall.
The Eagles, who lead the nation in three-point field goals per game (13.5), have drained double digit three-pointers in six of their seven games this season and now have 91 triples as a team. Five different players made at least one trey for the Green and Blue, led senior Eglah Griffin’s (Fort Myers, Fla./Dunbar HS/Seminole CC) 4-of-5 night.
Hansen finished with a game-high 20 points, 10 rebounds and five steals in 26 minutes. Griffin poured in 18 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two assists., while senior Nicoya Jackson (Houston, Texas/Cypress Springs HS/Southwestern Christian) chipped in with 10 points, six assists and four rebounds.
The Eagles opened the game with a 22-9 run, highlighted by 10 points from Hansen, to build a double digit lead. During the run, the Green and Blue held UCF to just 18.8 percent shooting from the floor (3-of-16). The Knights used a 7-2 spurt over the final 5:54 of the half to trim the FGCU lead to single digits (24-16) at the half.
UCF was limited to just 6-of-24 (25 percent) from the field and 0-of-6 from behind the arc in the first half.
FGCU hit 11-of-35 (31.4 percent) from the floor in the first stanza, including knocking down just 2-of-16 (12.5 percent) from long distance.
In the second half, FGCU continued to play solid defense and turned things up a notch on the offensive end. The Eagles opened the half with a 35-11 run to take a 59-27 advantage with 7:41 left in regulation. The Green and Blue never took their foot of the gas and went on to pick up the 75-36 win.
UCF was limited to just 14-of-47 (29.8 percent) from the field and 0-of-9 from behind the arc in the contest.
FGCU hit 30-of-70 (42.9 percent) from the floor on the night, including 10-of-32 (31.3 percent) from long distance.
The Eagles return to the court Monday, Dec. 19 for a conference matchup against USC Upstate. Gametime at Alico Arena is set for 5:15 p.m.
