FORT MYERS, Fla. – Senior Kelsey Jacobson (Barnesville, Minn./Moorhead HS) scored a game-high 17 points, as the FGCU women’s basketball team knocked down 17 three-pointers, en route to a 69-41 win over ACC foe Virginia Tech on Wednesday night in front of 1,826 fans at Alico Arena.
With the win, FGCU improves to 8-1 overall, while the Hokies fall to 3-8 on the season. The Eagles are now 2-0 against Va. Tech and 2-4 all-time against the ACC.
The Eagles, who lead the nation in three-point field goals per game (13.2), have drained double digit three-pointers in eight of their nine games this season and now have 119 triples as a team. Six different players made at least one trey for the Green and Blue, led by Jacobson’s 5-of-12 night.
Jacobson finished with 17 points, five rebounds and two assists in 31 minutes. Senior Nicoya Jackson (Houston, Texas/Cypress Springs HS/Southwestern Christian) poured in 15 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals. Freshman Whitney Knight (Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J. Reynolds HS) chipped in with 11 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals, while senior Eglah Griffin (Fort Myers, Fla./Dunbar HS/Seminole CC) added 11 points in 22 minutes.
The Eagles opened the game on a 30-11 run, highlighted by nine points from Jacobson, over the first 13:15 of the half. A layup from Knight at the 4:29 mark gave the Green and Blue their first two-pointer of the night and a 32-15 lead, after their first 10 field goals of the game all came from behind the three-point line. The Hokies outscored FGCU 6-5 over the final 3:00 of the period and the Eagles took a 37-21 lead into the intermission.
In the second half, FGCU continued to dominate Virginia Tech and extended their lead to as many as 32 points before picking up the 69-41 non-conference win.
The Hokies were limited to just 18-of-51 (35.3 percent) from the field and 1-of-3 (33.3 percent) from behind the arc in the game, while the Eagles hit 23-of-61 (37.7 percent) from the floor on the night, including 17-of-47 (36.2 percent) from long distance.
The Green and Blue now head to Honolulu, Hawai’i for the Hawai’i Rainbow Wahine Invitational from Dec. 28-30. FGCU will face NC State (Dec. 28), Hawai’i (Dec. 29) and Alcorn State (Dec. 30) in the round-robin format.
