FORT MYERS, Fla. – Senior Eglah Griffin (Fort Myers, Fla./Dunbar HS/Seminole CC) scored a game-high 17 points, as the FGCU women’s basketball team knocked down 11 triples for the second game in a row, en route to a 74-51 win over A-Sun foe Jacksonville on Monday night at Alico Arena.

With the win, FGCU improves to 14-2 overall (6-0 A-Sun), while the Dolphins fall to 4-12 (2-3 A-Sun) on the season. The Eagles are now 8-1 all-time against JU and 71-8 all-time in games played in the month of January.

The Eagles, who lead the nation in three-point field goals per game (12.4), have drained double digit three-pointers in 13 of their 16 games this season and now have 198 triples as a team. Five different players made at least one trey for the Green and Blue, led by Kelsey Jacobson’s (Barnesville, Minn./Moorhead HS) 4-of-6 night.

Griffin scored 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field, 3-of-4 from long distance and 2-of-2 from the charity stripe. Jacobson finished with 12 points, three assists and one board in 27 minutes of action. The Barnesville, Minn. native, the A-Sun’s all-time leader and the nation’s leader (among active players) in career three-pointers (302), hit 4-of-6 shots from behind the arc for the second consecutive night and has now made 25-of-33 shots from long distance over the last five contests. Freshman Whitney Knight (Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J. Reynolds HS) chipped in with 11 points, three rebounds, three blocks and a pair of assists.

Crystal Bell and Abril Peeples each had 12 points and nine rebounds for the Dolphins.

The Eagles shot out to a quick 14-8 lead after Knight knocked down a jumper at the 15:34 mark of the opening half. A layup from Tracie Sneed cut FGCU’s lead down to 14-10 with 15:18 left in the period. The Green and Blue then employed a 29-13 run to blow the game open and take a 43-23 lead with 52 seconds left in the half. During FGCU’s big run, the Dolphins were held with out a field goal for nearly 10 minutes before Crystal Bell scored a layup at the 5:52 mark. Bell closed the half with a fast break layup as the Eagles took a 43-25 lead into the locker room at the intermission.

FGCU shot 15-of-26 (57.7 percent) from the floor and 7-of-10 (70 percent) from behind the arc in the opening frame, while Jacksonville was limited to 34.5 percent (10-of-29) shooting from the field and were forced into 11 turnovers in the first half.

After a slow start to the second half by both teams, Griffin hit a three-pointer and a pair of free throws on consecutive possessions to push FGCU’s lead to 59-31 (10:18). The Dolphins used a 6-2 run to pull within 24 points (61-37), but they would not be able to inch any closer, as the Eagles went on to pick up the 74-51 win.

The Green and Blue will now head to Nashville, Tenn. to take on Belmont and Lipscomb. FGCU will face the Bruins on Jan. 12 (8:00 pm ET), before taking on the Bisons on Jan. 14 (5:00pm ET).
