FORT MYERS, Fla. – After leading FGCU to its second straight Atlantic Sun regular season title, which was also the program’s third in five years, and securing the first undefeated A-Sun season since 1995-96, redshirt-sophomore Sarah Hansen (McKean, Pa./General McLane HS) and senior Courtney Chihil (Tipp City, Ohio/Alter HS) were named to the A-Sun’s Academic All-Conference team the league office announced on Tuesday, Feb. 28. The A-Sun also honored Hansen as the Women’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year to highlight the league’s Academic All-Conference team.

Hansen was chosen as the Scholar Athlete of the Year, by the conference Sports Information Directors, after earning a 3.95 GPA in chemistry. The redshirt-sophomore helped the Eagles to the No. 1 seed in the Atlantic Sun Basketball Tournament, a 26-2 overall record this season and a perfect 18-0 in conference play. The McKean, Pa. native is averaging a team-best 13.8 points and 6.3 rebounds and ranking second on the Eagles in steals (1.9) and blocks (17). A Capital 1 Academic All-District 4 first team selection, Hansen sits eighth all-time in scoring in program history with 813 points and also ranks in the top-15 in the A-Sun in six categories (points, rebounds, field goal percentage, free-throw percentage, steals, blocks).

Chihil has played in 27 of 28 games for the Green and Blue this season, helping FGCU to the seventh-best winning percentage in the nation. Her 3.86 GPA in nursing earned her a spot on the inaugural A-Sun Academic All-Conference team. A member of the Capital 1 Academic All-District 4 first team, Chihil is FGCU’s leader in minutes and ranks among A-Sun leaders (in conference games only) in six categories (free-throw percentage, field goal percentage, assists, steals, three-point percentage and scoring).

The A-Sun introduced the new sport-by-sport Academic All-Conference teams this fall to recognize student-athletes who embody the conference’s mission of Building Winners for Life. All the members of the team boast a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (GPA) or better and participated in at least half of their team’s games.

The No. 1 seeded Eagles return to the court on Wednesday, Feb. 29 when they take on the No. 8 seed ETSU Lady Bucs (8-21, 7-11 A-Sun) at Mercer’s University Center in the quarterfinal round of the 2012 Atlantic Sun Tournament.
