FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women’s basketball team earned the No. 10 position on the CollegeInsider.com Women’s Basketball Mid-Major Top 25 poll, as announced on Wednesday.

Gonzaga picked up 15 first-place votes in the poll, en route to the top ranking, while Marist, Princeton, Green Bay and Toledo round out the top five.  Gonzaga finished the 2012-13 season with a record of 27-6, a West Coast Conference Championship and an NCAA berth.

The Mid-Major Poll is made up of institutions from the following conferences: America East, Atlantic Sun, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, Great West, Horizon, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mid-Eastern, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Summit, Sun Belt and West Coast Conference.  Independent teams are also considered in the voting.

Among Atlantic Sun competition, Stetson and Northern Kentucky also received votes in the poll, but were not ranked among the Top 25.

As the 2013-14 season approaches, FGCU has already been named the Atlantic Sun’s preseason favorite, in both the coaches and media polls and by College Sports Madness, while senior Sarah Hansen (McKean, Pa./General McLane High School) was selected to repeat as Conference Player of the Year and was a unanimous choice for the Preseason All-Atlantic Sun Team.  Redshirt sophomore Whitney Knight (Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J. Reynolds High School) was also named to the Preseason All-Conference Team, with sophomore DyTiesha Dunson (Albany, Ga./Westover High School) earning the conference’s fan-voted Defensive Player of the Year award with 149 ‘likes’ in a Facebook vote.

With their sights set on their 12th 20-plus win season and a third-consecutive perfect mark in regular season ASun action, the Eagles will begin the 2013-14 campaign on Friday, Nov. 8 at FIU.  FGCU’s first home contest against Bethune-Cookman is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 12, at 7 p.m. with Atlantic Sun action set to begin on Saturday, Jan. 4, when the Green and Blue play host 2012-13 regular season runner-up Stetson.
