FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women’s basketball team will open the 2013-14 home slate on Tuesday, Nov. 12.  The Eagles will host the Lady Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman in a 7 p.m. tipoff at Alico Arena.

THE GREEN & BLUE

FGCU enters the home opener with a record of 1-0 after defeating FIU 75-55 on Friday night.  Redshirt sophomore Whitney Knight (Winston-Salem, N.C., R.J. Reynolds High School) led the Eagles with a career-high 25 points in her first game back with the team after a season-ending injury last season.  Knight also added three blocks and two steals in the win.  Senior Sarah Hansen (McKean, Pa./General McLane High School), who was named the Atlantic Sun Preseason Player of the Year, added eight points and nine rebounds in the win.

Newcomers Jenna Cobb (New Holland, Ohio/Miami Trace High School) and Kaneisha Atwater (Fort Pierce, Fla./Fort Pierce Westover High School) added to the Eagles’ success in their first game in the Green and Blue uniform.  Cobb added 12 points for FGCU, while Atwater scored six and contributed to the Eagles’ strong defensive effort.

The victory in Miami moved the Eagles to 9-3 all time in season-opening contests.  The team is 10-1 in previous home openers with its only loss coming against Florida State in 2007.  The Eagles will be looking to extend that mark on Tuesday evening.

In two contests against Bethune-Cookman, the Eagles have earned two wins.  FGCU picked up an 80-48 victory in the last meeting in 2009.

Head Coach Karl Smesko will continue to guide the Green and Blue in his 12th season. Smesko, a four-time A-Sun Coach of the Year, earned his 350th career victory with the win at FIU.

SCOUTING THE WILDCATS

The Wildcats entered the 2013-14 campaign with nine returning letterwinners and four returning starters from last year’s team that went 12-17 overall and 7-9 in MEAC competition. The team finished eighth in the MEAC with four losses to end the season, including a 55-44 loss to Delaware State in the MEAC postseason tournament.

The 2012-13 team averaged 54 points per game, while allowing opponents to put up 56.9 points. The team brought down an average of 38.7 rebounds per contest and shot .361 from the field. This year’s team includes 82 percent of last year’s scoring and 62 percent of last year’s rebounding effort.  Individually, the Wildcats are led by senior Chastity Rene Taylor who averaged 13.5 points per game last season and paced the team in its season opener at Florida with 22. Terrenisha Hollis aided BC-U with 5.2 boards per game, 33 blocks and 57 steals last season. The senior added six points and eight rebounds in the team’s 93-65 loss to Florida on Friday night.
