INDIANAPOLIS – As the 2013-14 women’s basketball season continues, FGCU senior captain Sarah Hansen has again been recognized as one of the nation’s top student-athletes.  Hansen was named as one of 52 NCAA Division I nominees for the 2014 Allstate WBCA Good Works Team, as announced by the national organization this week.

The Allstate WBCA Good Works Team is composed of college women's basketball student-athletes who make outstanding contributions in the areas of volunteerism and civic involvement.

In its second year, the WBCA Good Works Teams honor players at all levels of college basketball who represent the sport's finest in the areas of leadership and charitable achievements amongst their peers. The student-athletes nominated for this prestigious award embody the true spirit of teamwork and giving back.

The 2014 nominees uphold impressive service resumes detailing unique and inspiring stories of servitude.

Hansen (McKean, Pa./General McLane High School) has positively represented FGCU during her time in Fort Myers.

As a chemistry major, mathematics minor and honors student, Hansen currently holds a cumulative grade point average of 3.92.  The fifth-year student-athlete has received a perfect 4.0 in four semesters at FGCU and earned Dean’s list or higher distinction in every semester of her academic career.

Outside the classroom, Hansen boasts an impressive resume of community service accomplishments and has compiled over 120 hours of service learning experience during her time at FGCU.  Hansen and has dedicated her time to organizations that serve youth programs in the local Fort Myers area with projects that include:

-Working with Imaginarium of Fort Myers, an interactive museum and aquarium where she organized trips for pre-school aged children and assisted in the Autism classrooms at San Carlos Park Elementary School

-Organizing a prom-type event called the ‘Spring Bling’ at the Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida

-Developing a new tutoring program that involved FGCU Athletics and the Quality Life Center, an organization dedicated to creating a climate of opportunity for at-risk youth in the area

Hansen has served as the captain of the FGCU women’s basketball team for three years and as this year’s only senior strives to set a good example, on and off the court.  On the court she is one of FGCU’s most decorated athletes.  She currently stands as the all-time program leader with 1,526 career points and 692 career rebounds. Hansen earned Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Year and College Sports Madness Player of the Year awards after a phenomenal junior year and was selected by both polls as the Preseason Player of the Year to begin the 2013-14 campaign.

In addition to the Player of the Year awards, Hansen’s junior year ended with an abundance of local and national accolades.  The awards include a Full Court Mid-Major All-American Honorable Mention, a position on the 2013 Capital one All-District-4 First-Team and her second-consecutive FGCU Most Outstanding Student-Athlete Award.

From the 84 WBCA nominees submitted by sports information directors across the nation on behalf of their schools, special voting panels will select two 10-member teams comprised of five student-athletes from the NCAA Division I level.  Former Duke University student-athlete, two-time NCAA champion and seven-time NBA All-Star Grant Hill will headline the Allstate NABC Good Works Team voting panel, while WNBA basketball star Tamika Catchings, who played at the University of Tennessee, will serve on the Allstate WBCA Good Works Team panel. The final roster of award recipients will be unveiled in February.

Members of the Allstate WBCA Good Works Team will be invited by Allstate, an official corporate partner of the NCAA, to the 2014 WBCA Convention and 2014 NCAA Women’s Final Four in Nashville, where they will participate in a community project in the city.
