Fort Myers – The FGCU women’s basketball team improved to 7-0 after defeating the University of St. Francis (IL) 67-37.
The Eagles jumped out to a quick 10-2 thanks to a Noreen McCallum jump shot.
After a three pointer from USF’s Aimee Shane to cut the lead to 10-5, the Eagles would go on a 13-0 run led a pair of treys from leading scorer Trish Fleming.
Fleming, who went 11-19 on the night with 3 three pointers is now averaging close to 21 ppg.
The Lady Saints would close the gap to 13 after a jumper by Latoya Campbell, but the Eagles would go on another run as they scored 11 unanswered points to take a 34-10 lead capped off by a Jennifer Santana long range jumper.
They would take a 33-16 advantage into the locker room.
The second half started similar to the first half as the Eagles went on a 10-0 run.
“I thought St. Francis gained a little momentum at the end of the first half, and I thought it was very important that we take control of the game from the outset of the second half,” Coach Karl Smesko said.
Fleming continued to score at will sinking a pair of jumpers as she ended up with 26 points on the evening.
The Eagles got a solid performance out of point guard Megan Jones tonight as she scored 6 points while dishing out 6 assists.
Tatyana Duverglas had a nice performance of the bench as she poured in 11 points (3-4 fg 5-6 ft).
FGCU outscored the Saints in the second half 34-21 for a final of 67-37.
The Eagles move to 7-0, and will now head north as they will play four games on the road in Indiana.
