FORT MYERS, Fla. – Junior forward Alex Kwiecinska scored 21 points to lead five players in double figures as Florida Gulf Coast University opened the 2004-05 campaign Monday night with a 90-69 victory over Saint Leo at Alico Arena. Junior guard Megan Jones connected on all six of her field goal attempts, including three of three behind the arc, to finish with 19 points for FGCU. Freshman forward Amber Bishko added 13 points, while junior guard Candy Myers finished with 11 and senior forward Andrea Clarke added 10. Saint Leo was paced by a game-high 24 points from freshman guard Amanda Holloway. Junior guard Danielle Hoeffner added 11 points for the Lions, while seniors Rosetta Little and Patrice Bonilla added 10 apiece. FGCU built a 50-35 haltime cushion behind 14 points from Kwiiecinska and eight points from Jones. The Lions closed the gap to eight early in the second half at 58-50 before a 19-8 run by the Eagles pushed the lead to 19 with under five minutes to play. Kwiecinska added nine rebounds while Myers dished out five assists for the Eagles, now 1-0. Little grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds for the Lions, now 0-1. FGCU will host Puerto Rico Bayamon on Friday at 5:30 in the 3rd Annual Hillmyer Tremont Classic. Saint Leo travels to West Florida for the UWF Tip-Off Classic Friday night. ST.
