Eagles Fall to Puerto Rico - Bayamon in the Hillmyer-Tremont Classic

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Junior guard Candy Myers(New Batavia, OH) paced the Eagles with 12 points and five assists as #21 Florida Gulf Coast University was handed its first defeat of season 58-46 against Puerto Rico-Bayamon in the Hillmyer-Tremont Classic at Alico Arena. Junior guard Ebonie Halliburton(East St. Louis, IL) contributed 11 points while going 5 for 6 from the free throw line. Senior forward Andrea Clarke(Guelph, Ont.) added 10 points and a career-high 17 rebounds for the Eagles. Puerto Rico-Bayamon picked up their first win of the season as they were led by twins Yahimily and Yoluana Cabrera. Junior guard Yahimily Cabrera had a game-high 16 points and 12 steals, while her sister added to the win with 11 points and two steals. Freshman forward Carla Escalera dished in 13 points going 5 for 8 from the field. Despite poor shooting, FGCU built a 27-24 halftime edge behind 12 points from Myers and 11 points from Halliburton. Puerto Rico-Bayamon closed the gap to one late in the second half at 35-34 before displaying a 13-0 spurt to take the lead by 14 with under three minutes to play. In the second half the Eagles could only muster 19 points, shooting 16% from the field as they fall to 1-1 of the season. FGCU is now 25-2 all-time at Alico Arena, with their only other loss at the hands of UPR-Bayamon last season. The Eagles host Eckerd College, 3-0 after a win over Saginaw Valley Friday afternoon at Alico Arena, Saturday night in their second game of the Hillmyer-Tremont Classic. Tip-off is set for 5:30pm.
