PENSACOLA, FL – Senior forward Andrea Clarke scored four of her game-high 23 points and had a key steal down the stretch to help the Florida Gulf Coast University women’s basketball team pull out a 75-69 win over the University of West Florida at the Lou Ross Center in Pensacola Monday night.
With the Eagles leading 66-64 with 2:15 remaining, Clarke (Guelph, Ont) converted a lay-up and a jump shot around a lay-in by junior guard Ebonie Halliburton (East St. Louis, IL) to put FGCU up 72-67. On the Argos next possession, Clarke made a key steal and the Eagles knocked down 3-of-4 from the foul line for the final margin.
FGCU (10-5) benefited from a 26-6 advantage in bench scoring and 27-12 in points off turnovers.
It was the fourth 20-point plus effort for Clarke, who hit 10-of-18 from the floor and 3-of-4 from the free throw line, while also grabbing seven rebounds.
Halliburton added 14 points and junior forward Alex Kwiecinska chipped in with 10 points. Junior guard Megan Jones (Indianapolis, IN) added nine points and a game-high six assists.
West Florida (8-5) was led by guard Erin Vierlings’s 20 points and six rebounds.
The Eagles will travel to Montevallo, Alabama for a Wednesday match-up with the University of Montevallo Falcons at 5:00 p.m.
