FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University women’s basketball team has released its schedule for the 2005-06 season head coach Karl Smesko announced on Tuesday. The Eagles will play at least 28 regular season games, including four tournaments. Although 12 of the first 15 games are at home in Alico Arena, where the Eagles are 35-5 over the past three seasons, FGCU will play nine of its final 13 games on the road in January and February. In all, FGCU will play 12 teams that it faced in 2004-05. “We have a lot of quality home games this season,” said fourth-year head coach Karl Smesko. “It will be a challenging schedule for us, especially playing a number of teams that got the best of us a year ago.” The Eagles will open up the season with the 4th Annual Hillmyer-Tremont Tip-Off Classic at Alico Arena on November 19 against the University of Puerto Rico at Bayamon at 7 p.m. Florida Tech and the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez will also compete in this year’s Tip-Off Classic. FGCU will also host a tournament featuring Missouri-Western, Christian Brothers, and Arkansas-Monticello on December 20-21 before hosting the 3rd Annual FGCU Holiday Tournament, which includes Eckerd College, Queen’s College of New York and Montevallo, on December 29-30. The regular season concludes with the Division II National Independent Tournament, hosted by FGCU, from February 24-26. Teams participating include Central State, Columbia Union, Upper Iowa, Puerto Rico Bayamon, Claflin, Converse and District of Columbia. FGCU returns four starters from last season’s 21-9 team and adds a solid recruiting class of eight newcomers.
