Women's Basketball Defeats Eckerd 84-68

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Junior forward Jen Conely poured in a game-high 20 points as no. 20 Florida Gulf Coast University beat Eckerd College 84-68 Thursday evening in the 3rd Annual Women’s Holiday Classic at Alico Arena. The Eagles improve to 13-1 while the Tritons fall to 2-9. FGCU never trailed in the contest as they jumped out to a 28-6 lead in the first nine minutes of the game and led 47-25 at the half. Conely had 12 points and junior forward Alex Nelson 10 points in the first 20 minutes as the Eagles forced 13 turnovers and had seven steals. A 10-2 run to the Eagles to start the second half pushed the lead to 30, 57-27, less than three minutes into the final half. The Tritons then went on a 23-9 run to cut the lead back to 16 with 9:45 to go, but could not get closer than 15 points the rest of the way. Conely connected on six three pointers en route to hitting 7-of-10 from the floor to lead five players in double figures for the Eagles. FGCU also got 19 points from senior guard Ebonie Halliburton and 13 points from junior forward Katie Schrader. Nelson had 12 points and a school-record nine steals while freshman Princess Stewart posted her first career double-double with 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Eckerd was led by 13 points each from Gabby Gattuso and Chimene Gordon. Eckerd will face Queens College, a 57-54 winner over Montevallo in first day action, in their final game in the Holiday Classic at 1:30 p.m. FGCU will meet Montevallo at 5:45 p.m.
