MIAMI, FL – Holding steady at No. 14 in Division II women’s basketball, the (19-1) Florida Gulf Coast University Eagles collected their 19th victory for the season over (3-15) Florida Memorial University 62-36.
Both teams were scoreless three minutes into the start of the game. Junior forward Jen Conely made the first bucket with a smooth jumper that started the Eagles in gear to gain an 8-0 lead five minutes in as junior forward Katie Schrader following Conely with the three field-goals.
At the half, the Eagles led 38-16. FMU looked to make a run scoring 20 points in the second to the Eagles 24 but it wasn’t enough to pull out of the 22 point deficit.
FMU was led by Kelyna Robin and Carol Duarte who posted eight points each. Courtney Jones led the Lions in rebounds pulling down seven along with four points, four blocks and two steals.
Once again leading the Eagles was junior forward Katie Schrader, scoring a game-high 25 points. Schrader posted 17 points in the first half alone, overall making 11 out of 12 field goals while collecting four rebounds, two assists and a block.
Conely was second on the team in points with 10 total, including two three pointers and four field goals. Conley also collected six rebounds leading the team and a steal.
FGCU connected on 43.5% shooting from the field, while FMU hit 40.6% from the floor. The Eagles held a 27-15 advantage on the board, including 11 offensive rebounds, and overcame 19 turnovers with four blocks and eight steals.
Senior guard Ebonie Halliburton finished with nine points and five rebounds for the Eagles. Jen Conely and junior forward Shonna Soeby collected four points each.
FGCU travels to Alabama to play West Alabama in Livingston, at 5:30 pm Monday January 30th and North Alabama in Florence at 6:00 pm Wednesday February 1st.
